Calculating Water Flow

To determine the total flow rate of the proposed system:

  • Multiply the number of drippers and micro-sprinklers time flow rate
For Example:
  • the system uses 50 1 GPH drippers, 50 2 GPH drippers and 5 micro-sprinklers with a flow rate of 10 GPH each.

  • Total flow required for this system is 50 GPH of 1GPH drippers + 100 GPH of 2 GPH drippers + 50 GPH of 10 GPH micro-sprinklers for a total of 200 GPH divided by 60 = 3.3 GPM

  • You must pick the correct size drip zone assembly components for your water flow needs based on the flow rate of 3.3 GPM. See Flow rate recommendation by model number.

Most homeowners will do just fine starting from a 3/4" hose bib (faucet). Using a 3/4" hose bib (faucet), will allow for a maximum of 18 GPM or 1,080 Gallons per hour. Using a drip zone from a hose bib (faucet) will allow for a much lower flow rate due to the flow rate limitation of the drip zone components

Flow rate recommendation for a drip zone assembly by model number

  • VA020: drip zone with 3/4" T filter and use with 1/4" micro tube: Maximum recommended flow rates of 35 GPH.

  • VA022: drip zone with 3/4" T filter and use with 1/2" .700 OD drip tube: Maximum recommended flow rate of 3.6 GPM (220 GPH).
