The 12-Outlet PC (TOP) Drip Head with 100' 1/8" vinyl micro tubing, model D073 made by DIG Corporation is used to convert a 1/2" sprinkler riser into a 12-outlet, low flow, water efficient drip irrigation system.

The TOP has twelve pressure-compensating, replaceable nozzles used for watering up to twelve individual plants, a small group of plants, areas with difficult terrain, windy areas or oddly shaped areas that a sprinkler head cannot reach. Retrofitting some of the sprinkler risers into a drip system will not have any effect on the sprinkler system’s total flow rate. DIGS' Irrigation Retrofit Kit includes a 1/2" FNPT, a twelve-outlet, pressure-compensating drip head with a flow rate of 3.3 GPH (gallons per hour) per outlet. The D070 DIGS' Irrigation Retrofit Kit also includes 100’ of high quality 1/8” micro tubing and all the components needed to install the kit.

Drip irrigation is the slow application of water directly to the plants' root zone in a predetermined pattern. Maintaining an optimum moisture level in the soil at all times results in less water lost to the sun and the wind. No water is wasted on non-growth areas, and the root zone is maintained at its ideal moisture level, combining the proper balance of water and air for a very efficient irrigation system.

One of the most important features of a drip irrigation system is the creation of a totally new and more favorable root zone environment within the planting. Drip irrigation sustains this environment by using low flow rates to maintain constant soil moisture levels. This encourages better growth and disease resistance by reducing plant stress.

This was the easiest and most pleasant sprinkler job I have ever done, and I have had a lot of horror stories in the past. (You know the drill, go down to the big "Despot" home supply center, spend an hour, ask a ton of questions (if you can find someone who knows about the product LIMIT 1 ; drop more bucks than you thought you would, get home & try to install it only to find that you're missing key parts-- know what I'm talking about.?) My experience with the TOP kit was just the opposite-- all the part were included, very clear directions, installed in less than half an hour. I like the fact that the little poly lines run straight to each plant and deliver water to the roots. I never thought that I convert big honkin' heads to low water flow without calling in an expert. I will be ordering several more TOP kits very soon.

Retrofit System layout D070

  1. First, remove the sprinkler head from the 1/2" riser, turn the water on momentarily and flush out the riser. Then turn the water off and screw the drip head (model D073) onto the 1/2" riser.
  2. Push and insert the end of the 1/8” micro tubing (model T019) onto the drip head outlets and run the micro tubing to the plant locations.
  3. Secure the end of the micro tubing near each plant using a stabilizer stake (model A127), and if using more than one outlet per plant, space the outlets 10-12” apart.
  4. Protect the end of the micro tubing from bugs and insects by using a bug plug (model D074) at the end of the micro tubing.
  5. If not using all the outlets, remove the cover, then remove the screen disc and use one of the rubber caps (D075) to close the outlet.
  6. If needed, use the 1/4" converter barb (model D064) to adapt the drip head outlet to 1/4" micro tubing.
  7. Turn the water on and make sure that each of the outlet locations is working correctly and, if necessary, move the stake location closer to the plant.
  8. If needed, a nozzle can be replaced by pulling the nozzle out and inserting a new one (see replaceable nozzle (model D069).

Note: The micro tubing can be buried or covered with mulch, but the end should be left above ground.

How much time to water:

If using exclusively drip irrigation heads: If the irrigation system is comprised of only drip irrigation manifolds, then turn the water onfor 20 to 45 minutes every two to three days, depending on your location and the soil type.  After a week or two check the soil and the health of the plants, and adjust the watering time as needed.  If you have an irrigation controller and you need to add more time, adjust the time on the irrigation controller or program the controller with additional start times.

For a mix of sprinklers and drip irrigation system: If the irrigation system is comprised of pop up sprinklers and one or more drip irrigation heads then turn the water onfor the same time that the sprinkler system was running.  After a week or two check the soil and the health of the plants, and adjust the location of the drip outlets.  If more water is needed, add additional drip irrigation outlets 6” to 10” from the plants.
