The Model ST100, Vegetable Garden Drip Tape Kit from DIG is a starter kit that contains parts to install five rows of drip tape in a vegetable garden using 100’, 15 mil drip tape with .6 GPH inline drip emitters inserted into the tape every 12”. This DIG drip tape kit has 5’ of high quality 1/2" drip hose with .600” ID x .700” OD, to start the system on a small lot with up to 25’ long beds. The DIGS' drip tape kit includes parts needed for this installation, from the hose faucet (spigot) to the end of the line. The drip tape kit can accommodate a flow rate of up to 220 GPH (3.6 GPM).

When designing a drip irrigation system using drip tape please be aware that drip tape work at very low pressure of 12 to 25 PSI. Make sure to install a 15, 20 or 25-PSI pressure regulator to each zone.

Suggestion in installing a drip tape system, first identify the number of similar irrigation zones needed. Irrigation zones are based on factors such as type of crop, total flow available in a given time (see drip tape flow rate and spacing), available pressure at the zone, available pressure for periodic flushing, topography layout, field length and soil texture. Once the zones are assigned and the drip system is designed, a schedule of irrigation must be set up to meet the unique needs of the crop in each zone. A properly designed and installed drip system will provide better uniformity for many years and can improve crop production

Recommendation: To install the drip tape fittings, turn the sleeve on the fitting counter-clockwise, insert and push the drip tape over the barb, and secure by turning the sleeve clockwise to go over the drip tape, ensuring a quality watertight connection.

The most important practice for a healthy and productive vegetable garden is the irrigation system. During years of normal rainfall, rains usually wet the soil and provide us with good supply of deep soil moisture. What happens later will depend upon the efficiency of your irrigation system. Adequate soil moisture is important for seed germination, uniform growth, and productivity. Correct use of a drip irrigation system should keep vegetable plants actively growing in dry periods yet cause no problem when rain occurs following irrigation. The system, when properly operated, keeps soil at the base of the plant (root zone area) moist. This may require operating the system for short periods two to four times a week during dry weather. Never allow the soil to completely dry.

One of the most important features of a drip irrigation system is the creation of a totally new and more favorable root zone environment within the planting. Drip irrigation sustains this environment by using low flow rates to maintain constant soil moisture levels. This encourages better growth and disease resistance by reducing plant stress.

The kit as package is pretty good. However, the drip tape end plugs are worthless. They don't fit in the tape tightly enouth, and the pressure ring just won't slide into a good position most of the time. If DIG would lengthen the plug by about 1 inch, or use the same pressure ring system on the T-joints, then the plugs would probably work.

  • Drip Tape: 15 mil, .634 ID x .664 OD
  • Dripper Spacing: 12"
  • Flow rate: .35 GPH @ 10 PSI, .6 GPH @ 25 PSI
  • Maximum run: 280' per row
  • Operating pressure: 10 to 25 PSI

Installation for ST100

Starting the irrigation system from a faucet:

Optional: If you wish to automate the system, first connect a battery-operated controller to the faucet (suggested model C001 - not included in this kit).

  1. Connect the 3/4" FHT x MHT backflow device (model A015) to the faucet or to a controller if used.
  2. Connect the 3/4" swivel adapter (model LF003) to the backflow device or to a pressure regulator if used.

Installing the drip irrigation tubing and drip tape:

  1. Insert the 1/2"drip tubing (model T001) to the compression side of the 3/4" swivel adapter (by wiggling it and forcing 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch into the drip tubing) then lay out the drip tubing perpendicular to the vegetable rows. The 1/2" drip tubing is used as the main line to deliver the water to the drip tape. You may require additional drip tubing if the planting is far from the water source or if you have a large number of rows.
  2. Lay out the drip tape (model T017) near each row of vegetables or between two close rows (6”-10” apart).  Extend the drip tape a few extra feet past each row and secure to the ground.
  3. For the last row connect the drip tape to the end of the drip tubing using the drip tape to drip tubing connector ( model A024)
  4. For each row and close to the drip tape punch a hole in the 1/2" drip hose using the punch (model A019).

To install the drip tape fittings, turn the sleeve on the fitting counter-clockwise, insert and push the drip tape over the barb, and secure by turning the sleeve clockwise to go over the drip tape, ensuring a quality watertight connection.

  1. Turn the water on and flush the line. After you flush the line, close the end of the drip tape.  Use the drip tape connector end (model A027) to close the end of the drip tape by inserting the drip tape over the male barb of the drip tape connector end and threading the nut over the tape to secure.
  2. Turn the system on manually and check to make sure that there are no leaks from any of the drip connections.

How much time to water:  Turn the water on for 45 minutes to 1 hour every two days, depending on your location and the soil type.  After a week or two check the soil and the health of the plants, and adjust the irrigation time as needed.  If you have an irrigation controller and you need to add more time, adjust the time on the controller or program the controller with additional start-times.

Suggested additional part not included in the above kit:   Model A011, 3/4" FHT x MHT 15 PSI preset pressure regulator/

The pressure regulator (model A011) is used to lower the incoming pressure to the drip system to the lower operating pressure of 15 PSI, which is within the range of recommended pressures for a drip tape system in this lenght.
