The C017 (DIG 510.075 series) single station battery operated controller from DIG include 3/4" high flow, in line globe valve. Used for drip irrigation or sprinkler systems in residential, commercial or agricultural applications and as a cost-effective repair for existing irrigation systems, this line of heavy duty controller features a large LCD display with four buttons to program and complete water proofing capability for use inside a valve box or above. Programming features include AM/PM clock, four start times per day, watering duration from one minute to eleven hours and 59 minutes in one-minute increments, 7 day programming schedule or cyclical from 3 hours to 30 days, rain delay of up to 30 days and more. The controllers use two 9-volt alkaline batteries that can last up to one year. Made of durable reinforced nylon with stainless steel spring and have flow control with manual on/off.

This In-line valve/Controller combo seemed, by its specs, to offer a nice suite of functions for the cost. BUT we struggled with this device for roughly a full year (1.5 growing seasons), but never managed to get it to work consistently within our drip irrigation system fed from a 500 gal. storage tank mounted ~15' above the ground (IOW: should have been plenty of water pressure to affect the valve's triggering). The electronic timer functions of the Controller itself worked fine (and it's great that it's programmable for 4 cycles per day), but the valve controlling the water release would often refuse to properly respond to the Controller's auto-open/close signals, hence, would remain in its previous state: opened or closed.

For a grower, not knowing whether a main timer/valve is functioning daily (when needed/expected) can be disastrous; watered plants (..or so you thought) mysteriously begin showing signs of dehydration distress ...or worse.

However, because we still scratch our heads that the device's failures might have been "pilot error" (highly unlikely, yet always a possibility, right?)on our part, I resisted giving it a single, lowest-ranked star. After all, during those irregular times WHEN it did actually work, well, it worked: water was released. However, when it comes to irrigating our crops, we need far better reliability than this combo unit offered.

ADDENDUM: Be sure to do an accurate calculation of your water supply's pressure to the valve. According to Cameron in Drip Store's Customer Service, the valve requires a minimum of 10PSI to function correctly. Our setup produces a nominal pressure of ~ 6.5PSI, hence, this potentially explains the unit's valve inconsistent operation.

The operating pressure of this model is 10 PSI to 150 PSI and the reason the valve is not opening is due to insufficient pressure from the 15’ elevation of the tank mounting.

To gain enough water pressure to operate this controller by using gravity, you must raise the water source (barrel) high enough above the system lines to generate 10 PSI.  For every 1' (12 inches) of elevation above the system there is a gain of .433 PSI (.030 bar). This means that if the water source is 10 feet (3m) above the system there is a pressure of 4.33 PSI (.30 bar) at the start of the system (.433 x 10 = 4.33 PSI). To achieve the 10 PSI the tank needs to be raised to around 24’ above the ground.

The operating pressure requirements for this device are clearly stated in the specifications that accompany the unit.
