Properly designed drip irrigation systems begin with what is called the drip zone or the drip zone assembly, which consists of two vital components for below grade irrigation: the filter to protect the drip emitters, and a pressure regulator to lower the pressure to the suggested operating pressure for a PC drip line. This assembly can be attached to any AC or DC inline valve inside an irrigation box. If using this option to start a system, begin the installation from the valve box using any brand name 3/4” valve.
When installing a drip system, the first component needed is the filter, which you attach to the valve. Next, attach the pressure regulator and last, connect the adapter to the drip line.
To install an air relief valve, ensure you have a 17 mm x 1/2" FNPT tee at the start of your system (for 1/2" .700 OD drip tubing systems, use adapter tee LF307 in conjunction with coupler A134; for 1/2" .620 OD drip tubing systems use adapter tee LF306 in conjunction with coupler A134). The air relief valve screws into the 1/2" FNPT of the barbed tee. The air relief valve connection is normally located near the pressure regulator assembly as this is often the highest point in the drip system or the center of the line. It is important to install the air relief valve at the highest point of the system layout to allow it to work correctly.
If the line flushing valve does not seal (continues to flush), disassemble the flush valve. Inspect all components, cleaning or replacing as necessary, and reassemble. You should be able to blow and draw air through the drip emitter that is attached to the diaphragm, and the diaphragm should be free of any rips or tears.
Damage may occur if the flush valve has been subjected to higher than recommended pressure (greater than 50 PSI).
If manual flush valves or flush ports have been installed in lieu of line flushing valves, they should be opened and the system flushed at least three times in each irrigation season until the flowing water is visibly clean. The zone may need to be flushed more frequently depending on the quality of the water source.
Flushing of a drip system is highly recommended anytime that the system has been repaired.
Installation for Micro Pop-up Indicators:
Use the DSPI system the same way you would install any other emission device. The device will not emit any water, but when the system is pressurized a red indicator cup will be raised to indicate the system is running.
To install the pop-up indicators use one of the two options:
Installation using drip tubing as the main lateral:
With this layout use the complete assembly micro pop-up indicators with 24” micro tubing and barb. Install the pop-up by punching a hole into the side of the drip tubing and inserting the 1/4" barb into the drip tubing. Mount the pop-up indicator about 2-4” above the ground in a visible area between plants.
Installation using PVC pipe as the main lateral:
With this layout use the complete assembly micro pop-up indicators with 1/2" MNPT. Install the pop-up indicator by installing a PVC tee with 1/2" FNPT and then thread the pop-up into the 1/2" outlet. Mount the micro pop-up indicator about 2-4” above the ground in a visible area between plants.
The 1/2" (17 mm) barb fittings are used in the installation of any brand name drip line or drip tubing. To connect the 1/2" (17 mm) drip tubing or drip line, use a hand pruner to cut the drip tubing or drip line, being careful to keep dirt from entering the drip tubing. Insert the barb side of the fitting into the end of the 1/2" drip tubing or drip line by forcing the drip tubing over the barb side.
Starting the irrigation system from a PVC pipe:
1. Glue to a 3/4" PVC pipe a PVC male adapter (model P367) (not included).
2. Thread a 3/4" 24-VAC, or DC valve to the male adapter using Teflon tape.
3. Connect the 3/4" MNPT drip zone assembly to the valve. Repeat the process using a Teflon tape at the other end and make sure to remove all the excess of the Teflon tape.
4. If using an AC valve, connect the wire from the valve to the controller using 18-gage wire with a waterproof connection.
5. Connect the drip line into the 17 mm barb by forcing the drip line over the barb.
6. Lay out the drip line and use our brown stakes model S045 to hold the drip line to the ground.
7. Turn the water on and flush the drip zone and the drip line.
8. Close the end of the drip line with hose end.
9. Pressurize the system and make sure that water is not leaking from the unit or any part along the drip line. Test the assembly manually and then automatically via the controller, and then program the controller.
10. At this time if below grade installation you can cover the drip line.
· Make sure that the water flow direction matches for each component, if any is in line with the water flow.
· Use Teflon Tape only with the filter and make sure to remove all Teflon tape excess..
