The Lemon shear model H322 from Zenport Industries are made of forged stainless steel and used primarily by growers for harvesting lemons and limes. This lemon clipper tool is designed for rapid, high volume harvesting and is also used by growers for harvesting other fruits. The lemon shear has an anvil cutting action with the two sharp blades cutting against each other’s faces, as opposed to a bypass cut where the two blades cut past each other.
Commercial growers use lemon shears such as Zenport H322 in harvesting lemons, first, thin the crop by picking lemons from developing clusters so the fruit is spaced evenly on the tree and no branch is drooping from weight. Thinning helps produce a better-tasting crop of lemons and should be done annually once the fruit is the size of a golf ball. Pulling the fruits from the stems can leave holes in the fruit skin and can make the fruits vulnerable to rot. The commercial growers harvest the fruit close to fruit skin using the hand shear.
Growers and marketers have always associated fruit quality with shear harvesting to provide high quality fruits. The clipping motion is such that the blade fits into the stem close to the fruit skin, cutting the stem off just above the fruit steam and close as possible without damage to the fruit. The leather strap attached to the shear allows the picker to attach the tool to his finger instead of putting the clipper down after each use.
