Watering first thing in the morning before the temperatures begin to rise is better for your plants, allowing excess moisture on leaves and top soil to dry before fungal and other diseases can develop. The most common cause of early plant death is generally considered to be over-watering. Using drip irrigation can help you sustain healthy and happy plants by applying water directly to the plant root zone. For established plantings, deep, infrequent watering is recommended. In most cases applying deep watering will encourage deeper rooting, which leads to stronger, healthier plants.

The G77AS Drip Irrigation Kit from DIG Corporation contains all the parts needed for a complete drip irrigation layout, able to cover up to 24 plants or up to 150 SF. This kit can be extended with the addition of up to 200 1-GPH drip emitters and up to 400’ of drip tubing.

Use this drip kit for:
• Rose gardens with one drip emitter per each new planted rose and two drip emitters for established roses with one drip emitter on each side of the plant.
• Vegetable gardens with one drip emitter per plant, near the plant spaced a minimum of 10 to 12” apart.
• Groundcover with one drip emitter per plant or spaced 12” apart in sandy soil and 18” apart in heavy soil.
• Shrubs with one to two drip emitters around each shrub spaced 12” apart in sandy soil and 18” apart in heavy soil.
• Small trees with two to three drip emitters around the trunk of each tree 12” apart in sandy soil and 18” to 24” apart in heavy soil.

This drip irrigation kit includes 24 pressure-compensating drip emitters with flow rates of 1, 2 and 4 GPH (gallons per hour), backflow device, 25-PSI preset pressure regulator, ¾” swivel adapter with hose thread, 50’ of high quality 1/2” drip hose, 50’ of 1/4” micro tubing and all the fittings and accessories needed to water roses, shrubs, ground covers and trees.
The G77AS Drip Irrigation Kit can accommodate a flow rate of up to 220 GPH, using drip emitters with a variety of flow rates. This kit is expandable up to 1500SF.

Note: The pressure regulator (included) is used to lower the incoming pressure to the suggested operating pressure of 25 PSI, which is within the range of recommended pressures for a drip irrigation system.

About Drip Irrigation:
Drip irrigation is the slow application of water directly to the plants' root zone in a predetermined pattern. By preserving an optimum moisture level in the soil, drip irrigation results in less water lost to the sun and the wind and less water wasted on non-growth areas. The proper balance of water and air leads to a very efficient irrigation system.

One of the most important features of a drip irrigation system is the creation of a totally new and more favorable root zone environment within the planting. Drip irrigation sustains this environment by using low flow rates to maintain constant soil moisture levels. This encourages better growth and disease resistance by reducing plant stress.

Connecting the 1/2" compression drip fittings:
To install the 1/2" compression fittings, cut the drip tubing with a hand pruner, being careful to keep dirt from entering the line. Hold the compression fitting in one hand and the drip tubing in the other and force the drip tubing into the fitting by wiggling it from side to side. Make sure that the drip tubing is pushed into the compression fitting for about 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch for a very tight fit. No glue or clamps are required.

Lots of emitters, and lots of hose, but not enough barbs to connect them all.

Unless you want to put all your emitters on your 1/2" main, you'll need to add some barbed connectors in order to connect more than four 1/4" lines from your mains.

Also, unless you're driving them into really tough clay, the "hold-down" stakes are worthless. On my aerated soil, they just pop right out on the tension of the 1/2" tubing.

Great starter kit. I set it up in my vegatable garden with an automatic timer and it works perfectly. It took less than 30 minutes to set up the whole system. Terrific timesaver and helps you to maintain even watering which is critical to good tomatoes.

Installation for G77AS

This drip irrigation kit has all the parts needed to start the system connecting to a faucet. 

Starting the irrigation system from a faucet:

  • Optional: If you wish to automate the system, first connect a battery-operated controller to the faucet (suggested model C001 - not included in this kit).
  1. Connect the 3/4" FHT x MHT backflow device (model A015) to the controller, or to the faucet if not used with a controller.
  2. Connect the 3/4" FHT x MHT pressure regulator (model A013) to the filter.
  3. Connect the 3/4" FHT swivel adapter with screen (model LF003) To the 3/4" FHT x MHT pressure regulator.

Optional: Starting the irrigation system from a PVC pipe:

  • Optional: If you wish to automate the system, first connect a battery-operated controller to the faucet (suggested model C000 - not included in this kit).
  1. Glue to a 3/4" PVC pipe a PVC male adapter (model P357) (not included).
  2. Use a 3/4" MHT x MPT nipple (model A010) (not included) to connect to the pipe thread making sure to use 3-5 rounds of Teflon tape.
  3. If you wish to automate the drip system, connect a 3/4" battery-operated controller (model C000) (not included)  to the nipple.
  4. Connect the 3/4" FHT x MHT 25 PSI pressure regulator (model A013) to the nipple or to a controller (not included) using the 3/4" adapter included with the controller.
  5. Connect the 3/4" FHT swivel adapter with screen (model LF003) to the 3/4" FHT x MHT pressure regulator.

Steps to connect all other components:

  1. Connect the poly tubing to the swivel adapter by wiggling and forcing the drip tubing into the compression side of the adapter and lay out the drip tubing to the garden area. The 1/2" drip tubing is used as the main line to deliver the water to the plants.
  2. Use 1/2" coupling .700 O.D. (model LF001) to connect additional 1/2" drip tubing, or for repair
  3. Use the 1/2" tee (model LF005) to split the 1/2" drip tubing if needed or for making a loop from the 1/2" drip hose around a tree.
  4. Turn the water on and flush the line, and then close the end of the 1/2"drip tubing (model T004) using hose end (model A006).
  5. Use the 1/4" micro tubing (model T009) to extend the drip emitters to the plants that are far from the 1/2" drip irrigation tubing.  If all the plants are next to the path of the 1/2" drip tubing, the 1/4" micro tubing is not needed.
  6. Use the 1/4" barb (model SF001) to connect the 1/4" micro tubing to the 1/2" drip tubing. To connect the 1/4" micro tubing to the 1/2" drip tubing punch a hole in the 1/2" drip hose using the punch (model A019) and insert the 1/4" barb, then connect the 1/4" micro tubing to the barb.

To water diverse planting such as trees, shrubs, bulbs and perennials, either option below can be used:

Option 1:For maximum system expansion using a single water source, and to better control the system’s total flow rate, use I-GPH (gallon per hour) drip emitters (model D076). We recommend using drip emitters with the same flow rate to resolve the difficulty of irrigating a garden planted with a diversity of plant types and sizes, for example a garden with trees, shrubs, groundcovers, bulbs and perennials installed on the same system. To increase the amount of water applied to larger or thirstier plants, simply add more drip emitters around the plant, at intervals of 12”. This drip irrigation method provides a larger wetted area to cover a larger section of the plants’ root zones. By adjusting watering time, the right amount of water can then be applied evenly to all the plants.

Suggested number of drip emitters per plant:

  1. Plants in close spacing: place one 1-GPH dripper every 10" to 12" apart.
  2. Small plants up to 2 feet high spaced a few feet apart: use one 1-GPH dripper per plant.
  3. Plants 2' to 3' high: use two 1-GPH drip emitters per plant spaced 12" apart.
  4. Plants 3' to 5' high: use three or four 1-GPH drip emitters per plant, spaced 12" apart or loop the drip hose around the plant and insert the drip emitters every 12".
  5. Plants 5' to 7' high: use four to six 1-GPH drip emitters per plant, spaced 12" apart or loop the drip hose around the plant with the drip emitters in preset spacing.

Option 2:Use a variety of dripper flow rates (1-GPH model D076, 2-GPH model D077 and 4-GPH model D078) to compensate for plant sizes and spacing. The disadvantage of this drip irrigation option is that the variety of flow rates makes it harder to control the total flow rate.

  1. Suggested number of drip emitters per plant:
    1. Small plants up to 2 feet high and spaced a few feet apart: use one 1-GPH dripper per plant.
    2. Plants 2' to 3' high: use 1 2-GPH dripper per plant.
    3. Plants 3' to 5' high: use 2 2-GPH drip emitters per plant spaced 12" apart.
    4. Plants 5' to 7' high: use 2 4-GPH drip emitters per plant spaced 12" apart.
  2. Use the 1/2" holder stake (model S006) to secure the 1/2" drip hose to the ground.
  3. Use the 1/4" stake (if needed) (model S005) to hold and secure the micro tubing with the dripper near the plant area.
  4. Use the punch (model A019) to punch holes in the 1/2" drip tubing for the insertion of the drip emitters and 1/4" fittings if needed.
  5. Use goof plugs (if needed) (model SF007) to repair small holes in the 1/2" drip tubing. The goof plug may also be used to close the end of the 1/4" micro tubing.
  6. Use the 1/4" ball valve (model A018) to control the flow to container or baskets

 How much time to water:  Turn the water onfor 45 minutes to an hour every two days, depending on your location and the soil type.  After a week or two check the soil and the health of the plants, and adjust the irrigation time as needed.  If you have a controller and you need to add more time, adjust the time on the irrigation controller or program the controller with additional start-times.
