The Drip Store’s 5/8”, 500’ 15 mil drip tape with drip emitters every 12” has a turbulent flow path welded into the seamless drip tape using only the highest grade resins ensuring product quality and unmatched performance uniformity. The drip tape is ideal for drip irrigation of vegetable gardens, row crops and flowerbeds including tomatoes, corn, melons, peppers, strawberries, eggplants and more. In areas with a limited water supply, above-surface and sub-surface drip irrigation has made it possible to get the most out of the water available. Sub-surface drip tape can be installed 4”-14” deep, depending on the crop, using 8 to 15 mil drip tapes. A longer season or a more permanent application will require a thicker wall drip tape (12-15 mil), and a short season will required a thinner drip tape (8-10 mil).
The flow rate for a drip tape can be as low as .12 to 2 GPM per 100 feet at 10 PSI, depending on model and brand used. It may be used above or below the ground with a maximum working pressure of around 25 PSI. When using drip tape, it is highly recommended that a pressure regulator and a filter be used for each drip tape zone.
The Drip Store’s 5/8” drip tape is available in 100’, 500' and in larger coils. The 100’ and 500' are 15 mil wall thickness with 12" drip emitter spacing. The larger coils are available in 8, 10, 12 and15 mil wall thickness with 8” and 12" drip emitter spacing (special order). Drip tape is a flat tape with drip emitters pre-inserted in a predetermined spacing of 8" to 12". The drip tape expands when filled with water and disperses the water through the pre-inserted drip emitters. The drip tape is ideal for crops or sites where total saturation coverage is desired along the drip tape path.
A drip irrigation system must use a filter for maximum effectiveness, and the type and quality of water being used determines which filter to select. Fertilizer injectors can also be added, to deliver fertilizer directly to the plant roots. A fertilizer injector is installed before the filter and can be used to inject some types of liquid fertilizers or mixes, pesticides and herbicides, as well as products to clean the drip system. This will add to the efficiency of the irrigation system.
When designing a drip irrigation system using drip tape, first identify the number of similar irrigation zones needed. Irrigation zones are based on factors such as type of crop, total flow available in a given time (see drip tape flow rate and spacing), available pressure at the zone, available pressure for periodic flushing, topography layout, field length and soil texture. Once the zones are assigned and the drip system is designed, a schedule of irrigation must be set up to meet the unique needs of the crop in each zone. A properly designed and installed drip system will provide better uniformity for many years and can improve crop production.

The tape works well and of the 300 feet we have laid only two emitters did not work initially (the plastic still covered the emitter and we had to cut it off.) Best to leave it laying rather than take it up each season. Worst part are the fittings for the tape. None hold absolutely securely.

Installation for Drip Tape Systems

  1. Place the tape laterals.

a.      Option 1: Mount the drip tape spool on a stand at the end of the row, tie the stand to the ground and pull the drip tape close to the ground.

b.      Option 2:Hold the end of the drip tape at the start of the row and walk holding the spool, placing the drip tape to the ground.

  1. Connect the drip tape to the main lateral and leave the end of each drip tape open.
  2. Flush the system and close the end of the drip tape using the drip tape ends.
  3. Turn the system on and make sure that there are no leaks from the fittings or in the drip zone area.
  4. Start irrigation.

Drip tape installation for vegetable gardens
Drip tape can be installed easily either above or below the ground. It is designed mainly for use in vegetable gardens or for a narrow row of vegetation or other row crops.
Most often, a vegetable garden is planted in parallel rows. This makes the layout of your drip tape very easy.

Run a single main line of 1/2 or 3/4" drip hose perpendicular to and along one end of the rows and insert a tape reducer into the drip hose at the center of each row of up to 2' in width. Then run the drip tape down each row.

Connect the drip tape to the tape reducer by turning the sleeve counter clockwise, inserting the drip tape over the barbed end of the connector and turning the sleeve clock wise to lock. Lay out the drip tape near the vegetable row, one line per row or one line between two rows of up to 2' wide.

After laying down the drip tape, turn the water on and flush the line and use the drip tape end to close the end of the line. For vegetable rows more than 2' apart, run one line of drip tape per each row of vegetables. If your rows are less than 2' apart, place the drip tape between every two rows. We highly recommend the use of a 10 to 25 PSI pressure regulator with this system.

Placement of drip tape for germination

To successfully use drip tape in seed germination, the soil type, the drip emitter spacing, and the depth and spacing between the drip tape lines must first be determined. The drip tape must be close enough to the surface and the drip outlets must be in close spacing to germinate the seeds. For example, drip tape 4” to 5” inches deep was successfully used to germinate onion seeds in silt loam soil while at the same time drip tape with 12” spacing failed to uniformly germinate onions.

Important: When using a drip system, the right amount of water must be applied. If more water is applied than plants need, most of the benefits of the drip system will be negated. The soil will be excessively wet, promoting disease, weed growth and nitrate leaching.
