I finished installing my K004 kit in my 20x48 side yard a week ago. So far, everything works beautifully. I felt the K004 kit was, overall, a good deal, and it simplified my DIY installation of drip irrigation. Even though I didn't use all the parts and I had to buy others that weren't included, it was still immensely helpful to be able to start with a set of pieces that are guaranteed to play together.
The directions are easy to follow. It took me about half an hour to figure out how the head assembly went together. At first I had a hard time attaching/removing connectors to the poly tubing and microtube -- quite a workout for my muscles! -- until I wised up and started using hot water and pliers.
Some helpful hints for others contemplating the K004 kit...
- Order a roll of teflon tape for taping the threaded parts in your head assembly. The K004 kit doesn't come with it, but the instructions call for it, and you'll probably need it to prevent leaks. If you don't already have some, save yourself a trip to Home Depot and just order it (part A042) when you order your K004 kit ;)
- The kit doesn't include drip line with embedded emitters. Depending on your garden, this may or may not be an issue. In my case, I was originally planning to use the kit's microsprayers on my flower beds, but then I realized that drip line would be more appropriate for flower beds that have a large number of varying-sized shrubs. Plan ahead and save yourself another trip to Home Depot ;)
- If you do end up using drip line, you'll also need additional stakes (part S006) for holding it down. The K004 kit only has 30 of them. Save yourself a trip to every Home Depot in a 15-mile radius because I found HD is often out of them ;) Figure you'll need to stake down every 3 feet or so.
- If you'll be attaching a lot of microtubing to your mainline (say, for container plants and shrubs), you'll probably need more 1/4" microtubing and 1/4" barb connectors (SF001).
- If you want to hook up both your drip system and a hose (say, for washing the car) to the same hose bibb, order a Y connector. Sorry, I don't have the part # on that one, but I know The Drip Store carries this item because I ordered mine from them.
- Remember to clean your tubing punch with a toothpick after each hole you punch. This will help prevent debris from getting into your tubes.
Bottom line, I'm a satisfied customer. Since I just installed, I can't comment (yet) on durability, but maybe I'll be back to do that after a few Colorado winters.....
