Filters with a disc element (example) offer better performance than screen filters, being effective at filtering organic matter in addition to particulate matter like sand and soil. Unlike screen filters, disc filters consist of stacked round grooved discs, which utilize three-dimensional filtration to stop organic materials, sand, and other particulate matter. The numerous small grooves on each side of the stacked discs act to disrupt and then block flow of organic material as the water moves through the filter. A disc filter element is comprised of a stack of these grooved discs.

Like screen filters, disc filters also need to be cleaned periodically. To clean a disc filter element, unscrew the filter canister and remove the element. Twist the end without the o-ring to loosen the stack of discs. From there you can either use pressurized water to clean the discs or take them off of the element entirely to soak them in a cleaning solution or clean each disc individually. When putting the element back in the housing, put the end with the spring towards the bottom, away from the threaded ends.

150 and 155 mesh filters are considered "standard" and will filter out material large enough to cause clogs in standard drippers. Coarser filters (less than 150 mesh) can be used to filter larger material, while finer filters (such as 200+ mesh) are better suited for filtering smaller particles, such as very fine sand.
